If you want to open a drawer and close its parent drawer as-you-go without having to permanently turn on the corresponding option in Prefs/Workbench simply double-click the drawer you want to enter whilst holding down Right Amiga (or Left Amiga if you are using AmigaKeyRemapper).
You can also do this with regular icons as well to close the current window after for example opening a document or running an application.
