== Introduction ==

The AmigaOS Documentation Wiki provides the latest information on how to program systems running AmigaOS. It has been updated for Release 4.0 and higher of AmigaOS and covers the all the computer systems which run the Amiga operating system from the A500 all the way up to the X1000.

This wiki is meant to help you learn how to program AmigaOS systems. It assumes some previous experience with programming and familiarity with computers in general. Although it is not required, a knowledge of the C programming language will make it much easier to understand the material in this book. Most of the Amiga operating system is written in C, hence C is the language used for the programming examples. Other languages are available such as [http://home.ntelos.net/~tbreeden/ Modula-2], [http://cshandley.co.uk/portable/PortablE.html E] and C++ but the primary interface for all AmigaOS programming is still C.

This wiki is intended for the following audiences:

* Programmers who want to create application software for AmigaOS systems.
* Software developers who want to upgrade their software for Release 4.0 or higher of the operating system.
* Anyone who wants to know more about how AmigaOS works.

The system software is organized into related groups of functions called libraries. The same basic organization is used for this wiki.

JXFS is a fast and robust filesystem that supports devices up to multiple-terabytes.

You cannot boot AmigaOS directly into a JXFS partition so you should ensure that AmigaOS is installed on a partition formatted as SFS.
Similarly a quirk in [[AmiCygnix|AmiCygnix]] is not yet compatible with JXFS and it is recommended that it be installed on the AmigaOS System partition as well.

JXFS is recommended for all other partitions for improved performance.

Intuition is the windowing system and user interface (UI) engine of AmigaOS.

It was developed almost entirely by RJ Mical, Intuition should not be confused with Workbench, the AmigaOS spatial file manager, which relies on Intuition for handling windows and input events.

Intuition is the internal widget and graphics system. It is not implemented primarily as an application-managed graphics library, but rather as a separate task that maintains the state of all the standard UI elements independently from the application.
This makes it singularly responsive because UI gadgets are live even when the application is busy. The Intuition task is driven by user events through the mouse, keyboard, and other input devices. It also arbitrates collisions of the mouse pointer and icons and control of "animated icons".

AmigaOS is a very stable platform, however there are third-party software applications that aren't as stable and can potentially bring your computer to its knees.

The Grim Reaper will appear if this happens and will try its best to lock down the misbehaving application, preventing it from crashing the whole system. Chooseing the option 'Kill' will suspend the troublesome application.

There are other options as well such as creating a Crash Log - which can be useful for developers to try and identify the problem.

Fonts in various formats are supported in AmigaOS including bitmap, compugraphic and truetype fonts.

By default all fonts are stored in SYS:Fonts/ and new fonts can be installed using [[TypeManager|TypeManager]].

Widely available free truetype fonts can be downloaded and installed from the Internet.

If you would like to change the look of your Workbench Fonts, you would use the Font prefs program in your Prefs drawer.

Filer is particular nice when used in conjunction with Context Menus. An 'Open New Filer here' option can be added to the Context Menues for Drawer windows. Please read the documentation included for instructions on how to set this up.

Filer can also be set-up to browse OS4Depot.

If you install [[Jack|Jack]] you can also simply type 'F' on the keyboard instantly to spawn two Filer instances side-by-side - a great time saver.

The more modern SGS and JXFS are much faster and more robutst file systems. Both of these file systems are recommended when setting up new drives for day-to-day use.

Other file systems are available or planned for the future, for example NTFS.

Environment variables are used in AmigaOS within script or batch script processing.

There are both global and local variables, and they are referred to with a dollar sign in front of the variable name, for example $myvar.
Global variables are available system-wide; local variables are only valid in the current shell. In case of name collision, local variables have precedence over global variables.
Global variables can be set using the command SetEnv, while local variables can be set using the command Set. There are also the commands GetEnv and Get that can be used to print out global and local variables.

Global variables are kept as files in ENV:, and optionally saved on disk in ENVARC: to survive reboot and power cycling. ENVARC: is an assign to SYS:Prefs/Env-archive where SYS: refers to the boot device.

A Docky is a small program that runs within your AmiDock.

Some Dockies are included as standard with AmigaOS. More can be downloaded from OS4Depot.net.

There are Dockies for Clocks, displaying Photos, CPU meters and so on. Some applications actually feature their own built-in Dockies such as the one found in TuneNet which lets you skip a trick, pause music and so on. AmiUpdate also sports a nice status docky that shows when updates are available or when AmiUpdate is updating your system. Finally the email client Yam also uses Dockies to show new or unread email messages in your inbox.

Shuts down Workbench, but only if all programs (like Commodities) have been closed down. Will display a message like 'Cannot quit yet, there are x WB launched program(s)' if there are some still running. Use Exchange to close down commodities.

You must start a Shell before quitting Workbench if you want to continue work afterwards. But if you start a Shell in the normal way, this in itself will prevent you from quitting Workbench, as that Shell is now one of the 'WB launched programs'. The way around this is to add the NOAPPWINDOW switch to the WINDOW tooltype in a Shell icon (e.g. make a copy of the SYS:System/Shell icon and change the WINDOW tooltype to 'WINDOW=CON:100/200/800/500/AmigaShell/CLOSE/NOAPPWINDOW' or similar). Then the Shell window will no longer accept dragging of icons onto it, but will in return allow the Workbench to close while it is open.

Note that unlike some other operating systems, it is not a requirement for turning off your Amiga that you have first closed or quit the Workbench. It is quite safe to simply turn off the machine, as long as no writing to disk is in progress. But of course you should first make sure you have saved any data or projects you were working on. Also note that sometimes a filesystem will wait a few seconds after the last write and then make a final write to disk of some caches, so as a rule of thumb you should always wait three seconds after you save something before rebooting or turning off the machine.
